Nvidia module cannot be loaded by X (lubuntu 18.04)

Asked by Michel van Eijk

Hi,

I've been trying to get a fresh Lubuntu 18.04 install to use the Nvidia 340 driver for my Nvidia GT 430 Graphics card. Using an old mainboard - ASUS P5VD2-MX. My graphics card is recognised, but X cannot load the nvidia module according to my Xorg.0.log file. When trying to start Nvidia-settings, i get an error saying 'unable to load info from any available system' and the GUI window does not open, which is strange but not a show stopper for me. I've tried making adjustments to my xorg.conf to manually force the driver to be used, but it just doesn't seem to work and now I am stuck with 1280x1024 resolution on my monitor (dell P2414Hb) which looks a bit stretched and isn't using the full 'real estate' so to speak.

I know the easy way out is 'buy a new main board' or 'change hardware', but it is about the challenge of making this work. It used to work fine with Ubuntu 16.04 on both Unity and KDE. How can I work around this to make Lubuntu use the nvidia driver and therefore the full capabilities of my graphics card? I've followed the Graphics Troubleshooting Procedure on the Ubuntu Community website and have run the diagnostics as instructed, for which I have pasted full output below:

Update: I managed to find out that the Xorg DDX module was not found in its expected location. Created symlink from /usr/lib/nvidia-340/xorg/nvidia_drv.so to /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers/nvidia_drv.so in order for it to find my xorg module. It then loads the module, but fails to initialise the kernel module.

Next step I performed was using depmod to update dependency list and use modprobe to insert kernel module:

sudo depmod -a sudo modprobe -vv nvidia
modprobe: INFO: ../libkmod/libkmod.c:364 kmod_set_log_fn() custom logging function 0x555d8dbfc6c0 registered
modprobe: INFO: ../libkmod/libkmod.c:331 kmod_unref() context 0x555d8efb4460 released

Going to reboot now to see if that resolves/improves the situation

Update: Situation unchanged after reboot. I tried to remove/purge nvidia-340 and tried with a newer version (nvidia-390), but this failed to load x altogether (black screen, when trying ctrl-alt-f1 I get to login prompt, but this disappears after a few seconds and goes back to the black screen; as if it is cycling through video modes to discover which work but without success).

Any help would be appreciated. I've spent quite some time searching forums and google for similar issues and possible solutions but nothing has worked so far. It seems the nvidia module gets loaded in the kernel but maybe not properly?

Finally gave in and did a fresh install of 16.04 lts, this time xubuntu distro. After initially trying to install a variety of browser versions, I decided to try and use the VGA port instead of the DVI port of my graphics card. Magically, everything started working. So it seems as if it DVI output does not work for this hardware combo with Ubuntu 18.04. Don't have another monitor to test with though.
