Installing KDE4 session in Ubuntu

Asked by JKhoo

Is it possible to install Kubuntu alongside Gnome in 8.10? Recently upgraded to Core 2 Quad processor. Cannot install KDE4 from Synaptic Package Manager. Did not have this problem under my Pentium4 system. Any ideas or solutions much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Furthermore KDE4 Desktop Environment under Add/Remove Applications shows this.

KDE4 cannot be installed on your computer type (i386). Either the application requires special hardware features or the vendor decided to not support your computer type.
Canonical does not provide updates for KDE4. Some updates may be provided by the Ubuntu community.

Upon checking the box 1 get this

KDE4 cannot be installed on your computer type (i386)

Either the application requires special hardware features or the vendor decided to not support your computer type.

Thank you

Hmmm, i don't like blue so i avoid Kde but here's there homepage
http://www.kde.org/

and their download page, try the Kubuntu one rather than mandriva's or anything lol
http://www.kde.org/download/#v4.2

I doubt this will draw in any of the other dependencies thoughso it should just be the desktop environment itself. I think there were quite a few problems with 4.0 and 4.1 but it sounds like 4.2 might be ok now. It probably isn't in the repositories yet because it's proabaly not proven stable enough for the majority of users and architectures yet.

Take care in trying this and make sure you know a way to revert to the gnome de from the command-line in case anything goes wrong.

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

Yes you can install kde alongside ubuntu. Go into synaptic and install "kubuntu-desktop"
Or
sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop
Then log out or restart when it finishes and select it on the login screen if you want to use it.

Hope that helps
Shane

lol, Kosmic Kola, the 9.10 release isn't due out until 2009, October ;) Now you see how the numbering works and why there's less chance of getting confused, although i suppose we could have thought you meant 8.10 perhaps ...

9.04 is due to be released properly around the 23rd April so at the moment it's still a 'beta' version and is considered 'unstable and possibly have some bugs' but most people have found it quite stable and easy for a few months now.

I still haven't seen the default wallpaper! I hope its nicer than 8.10. I really liked 8.04 but 8.10 looked ugly to me.

Good luck, have fun and regards from
Tom :)
