NVidia install fails on bionic

Asked by John Bester

I have upgraded Ubuntu 16.04 to 18.04 and now I cannot install NVidia drivers. I have tried the following options:
Use default Nouveau drivers does not work
Using "additional hardware search" to install NVidia drivers does not work
Downloaded and installed latest NVidia 340 drivers from web site does not work
Installing NVidia 340 from Apt repository does not work

My Graphics card: NVidia Geforce 210

The installer from NVidia fails to build kernel module. I have tried with and without the "Build DKMS" option - both failed.

The result is that the only desktop session I can open is Gnome Fallback in 1024x768 mode.

Output follows below. Please note that I had to fall back on my onboard video card to at least be able to work, so status of Nvidia packages is not installed at this time.

$ dpkg -l | grep nvidia
rc nvidia-340 340.106-0ubuntu3 amd64 NVIDIA binary driver - version 340.106
rc nvidia-opencl-icd-340 340.106-0ubuntu3 amd64 NVIDIA OpenCL ICD
rc nvidia-settings 396.18-0ubuntu0~gpu18.04.1 amd64 Tool for configuring the NVIDIA graphics driver

Run:

sudo dpkg -P nvidia-340 nvidia-opencl-icd-340 nvidia-settings
sudo apt-get clean
sudo reboot

Is it happier now?

Can you help with this problem?
