Unable to upgrade to 18.04

Asked by Vineet

While trying to upgrade I get following error:
failed to download repository information check your internet connection

On the command line:

W: GPG error: http://archive.canonical.com precise Release: The following signatures were invalid: 630239CC130E1A7FD81A27B140976EAF437D05B5
E: The repository 'http://archive.canonical.com precise Release' is not signed.

Little history:
I had manually updated the Software Source list (it was recommended by someone on launchpad).
I have already tried this :
https://askubuntu.com/questions/131601/gpg-error-release-the-following-signatures-were-invalid-badsig

But nothing works.

Please help.

Thanks,
Vineet

Hi Vineet,

You can try following steps and see if it works:

1) Open Software & Updates application. It should be the one with multiple tabs like Ubuntu Software, Other Software, Updates, Authentication, etc. "
2) In the tab "Ubuntu Software" there is an option "Download from", select "Main server" from the drop-down list.
3) Click on "Close" button and close the application.
4) Open "Software Updater " application or run sudo apt update

Hopefully, after step 4, you should not get the hash error. If you are not getting the error, then again you open Software & Updates application and from "Updates" tab, select "For Long-term support versions" from the "Notify me of a new Ubuntu version" option (the last option in this tab). Then again close the application and do step 4. This should show you a new button saying that the new version 18.04 is available.

Regards,
Abhishek

Hi Abhishek,

Thanks for the response, but that did not solve the problem.
Any other suggestions?

What output do you receive for the command

sudo apt-key adv --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com --recv-keys 630239CC130E1A7FD81A27B140976EAF437D05B5

Have you tried initiating the release-upgrade with the command

sudo do-release-upgrade

Have you read the Bionic Beaver Release notes?

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/BionicBeaver/ReleaseNotes#Upgrading_from_Ubuntu_16.04_LTS_or_17.10

I assume that you would have to use

sudo do-release-upgrade -d

if you want to upgrade to 18.04 already now.
