Spftware Updater is not seeing 18.04 update availability

Asked by tadiv

So, I follow the instructions at https://tutorials.ubuntu.com/tutorial/tutorial-upgrading-ubuntu-desktop and https://www.zdnet.com/article/how-to-upgrade-to-ubuntu-linux-18-04/ but my software updater is not offering an upgrade to 18.04 (I'm currently on 16.04 and up to date with all updates)...

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Tom

OK - SO, for anyone who expects this to just wor, here is something from the release notes:

"Upgrading from Ubuntu 16.04 LTS or 17.10
Upgrades from 17.10 will not be enabled until a few days after 18.04's release. Upgrades from 16.04 LTS will not be enabled until a few days after the 18.04.1 release expected in late July."

SO, I guess if we want to use the easy way to upgrade, we have to wait. IMO, Stupid. I mean, why hide this important detail in the release notes instead of just including it with the instructions on using the updater?

OK - SO - it turns out that one IS able to use the upgrader - following the instructions at: https://www.zdnet.com/article/how-to-upgrade-to-ubuntu-linux-18-04/

BUT before executing the steps below, you need an 18.04 disc to be inserted into your drive...

"Next, if you want to do this from the GUI, take the following steps:

Open the "Software & Updates" setting in System Settings.
Select the third tab, called "Updates."
Set the "Notify me of a new Ubuntu version" dropdown menu to "For any new version."
Press Alt+F2 and type in "update-manager -cd" (without the quotes) into the command box.
Update Manager should open up and tell you: New distribution release '18.04' is available.
If not, you can also use "/usr/lib/ubuntu-release-upgrader/check-new-release-gtk".
Click Upgrade and follow the on-screen instructions."
