won't finish booting up after updating ubuntu 16.02 LTS

It was working OK till I updated , after the update was finished I was
told to restart , after desk top is loaded it stops working .
 none of the icons on the left show up I can open any
of the icons on desktop but can't delete them , also any Icon with a
http address will go on the Internet , also can't delete that off
screen,,,, can boot up as a gust .Hope you can work some thing out , I have a ubuntu 10.10
netbook disk but couldn't boot from it , not that I have that version on
here . it may be I have to start it from windows , which i haven't used
for years where can i get a 16.o4 disk

If you log in as guest and run:

su foo
sudo adduser bar
sudo adduser bar sudo

Change "foo" for your usual username and "bar" for a new temporary account. Log off and log on as "bar"

Is the desktop OK there?
