Ubuntu 16.04 becomes unresponsive after entering password

Asked by NoBugs

After latest apt dist-upgrade Ubuntu 16.04 would load to login screen, after entering password, it becomes unresponsive, not even Ctrl + Alt + F1 would let me to console, hard reset needed. I am using default Unity and Lightdm.

I solved the problem temporarily with loading older kernel 4.13.0-36 instead of new 4.13.0-37, it seams to work.

This problem affects all three PCs in our office, two notebooks Dell and HP and unbranded box PC.

My question is what should I bee looking for in logs? I am looking into cat /var/log/syslog.1 and journalctl -b1 but it does not seem to have anything suspicious, I can't even find record of the system being shortly booted and crashed.
