Revert 64bit to 32bit on 8.10

Asked by Tom

My 8.04 installation made an autoinstall of the 64bit ubuntu. As I upgraded to 8.10 and 64bit I have run into problems with som programs I use, that only seems to be able to handle 32bit, depending on the libraries that are used when compiling my own programs. So my question is if it is possible to revert the 8.10 installation to a 32bit version.

Regards / Tom

Sorry but, it isn't possible, you have to reinstall OS 32bit version.

Reinstall 8.10 but the 32bit version :(
I think that's about the only way. Of course you'll need /home saved onto external drive or perhaps just a separate partition so that data is kept safer. Having a backup is always good when your installing or even just repartitioning.

When you reach the Partitioning section of the installer choose "Manual" partitioning and make sure that all of the partitions are UNticked in the "Format Partitions?" column. Also set the ubuntu partition's "Mount Point" to "/". Right-click on a partition to make changes. It will give a generic warning but your should end up with all of your data and /home intact BUT it can go wrong very easily so please make sure you have backed up all your crucial data.

Alternatively if you have 10Gb or so of free space on you drive then just partition off a new spce and install the 32bit version to the new partition. there's no reason why you can't have a multi-boot machine with 2 versions of Ubuntu. If it works then you might be able to use the old aprtition as /home for your new one ;)

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

Thanks a lot for your answer!
It feels good at least to live in the hope of all of my /home still being there after a reinstall.
