Meltdown Kernel Fix for 32 bit Architectures?

Asked by Cassidian

Hello,
I'm working on machines with Intel processors and with the following OS:
Ubuntu 14.04 LTS 32 bit.

About "Meltdown", I saw the following sentence on Internet:
"No Meltdown fix is currently available for 32bit (x86): Moving to a 64-bit kernel is the only currently recommended mitigation."

My questions:
Is there a fix planned for the Ubuntu 14.04 LTS 32 bit ?
If yes, do you know when this one will be released ?

Thanks in advance.

32bit is slowly being dropped. Is your CPU not 64bit?

What is the output of:

cat /proc/cpuinfo

Thanks

The CPU is 64 bit, and the machine runs several virtual machines on it.
In one of the VM, there is:

cat /proc/cpuinfo
processor : 0
vendor_id : GenuineIntel
cpu family : 6
model : 6
model name : QEMU Virtual CPU version 2.0.0
stepping : 3
microcode : 0x1
cpu MHz : 1995.192
cache size : 4096 KB
physical id : 0
siblings : 1
core id : 0
cpu cores : 1
apicid : 0
initial apicid : 0
fdiv_bug : no
f00f_bug : no
coma_bug : no
fpu : yes
fpu_exception : yes
cpuid level : 4
wp : yes
flags : fpu de pse tsc msr pae mce cx8 apic sep mtrr pge mca cmov pse36 clflush mmx fxsr sse sse2 syscall nx lm pni vmx cx16 x2apic popcnt hypervisor lahf_lm vnmi ept
bogomips : 3990.38
clflush size : 64
cache_alignment : 64
address sizes : 40 bits physical, 48 bits virtual
power management:

Then the machine itself and all the VMs on it are 64 bit.

However, our sofware uses 32-bit pointers and is compiled for a 32 bit OS.
Moreover, this one is difficult to modify and it would take a lot of time to do it.
That is why we use a 32 bit version of Ubuntu in the VM.

Then you may be stuck. 32bit will probably all vanish

Hi, thanks for you reply!

Does 'Canonical Support' provides help/packages for Ubuntu 14.04 LTS 32 bits anyway depending on the user's contract (priviledges user vs premium user, ...) or do we need to definitely look after another solution ?

Regards.

Hi,

I reiterate my last request:

Does 'Canonical Support' provides help/packages for Ubuntu 14.04 LTS 32 bits anyway depending on the user's contract (priviledged user vs premium user, ...) ? In other words if we pay for it would we get something for Meltdown in few weeks ?

Regards.
