systemd automount hangs desktop if NFS volume is offline

Asked by bmomjian

I am running Ubuntu 16.04. Since upgrading from 14.04 to 16.04, I have found that the 'auto' fstab mount option no longer mounts NFS volumes on access. I found that I need to use the x-systemd.automount fstab option to automount my NFS volumes on access.

However, if the NFS volume is inaccessible, e.g. I am not on a network, the desktop freezes when I go to the desktop menu. I think that is because two of the NFS mounts are listed under "Places". Also, 'df' hangs in such case. I am using these mount options:

    async,soft,noauto,x-systemd.automount,x-systemd.device-timeout=10,timeo=14,intr,_netdev

Any suggestions on avoiding such hangs?

Are there any bugs reported?

No, I can't find any matching bugs. Should I report this as a bug?

Also, I should clarify that, when the NFS server is not accessible, the hang is permanent and I have to log into a character screen, modify /etc/fstab, and reboot to get my system working again.
