Installation problems - 64-bit edition

Asked by BU_

Hello everybody,

I have a laptop Asus A6Kt based on AMD Turion 64 MT Processor.

I downloaded Ubuntu 7.04 (ubuntu-7.04-desktop-amd64.iso).

I successfully verified the md5 sum of the .iso file and burned it on CD-RW.

Then I try to boot from it. Boot is successful, and I see boot menu.

My problem is that when I choose ANY option from it my system hangs up after

kernel alive
*The next long line is shown on the display* (also something related with kernel)
-===SYSTEM HANGS UP===-

Then i was adviced to choose the option that lets you edit the boot line and to try acpi=off in the kernel line

that worked, and it tried to do something, but...

First I got an error message from the X server

Then I got the following:
[ 212.205189] bcm43xx: Error: microcode "bcm43xx_microcode5.fw" not available or load failed

And then I was thrown into the dark console like "ubuntu@ubuntu:"

So I suppose I am able to enter commands (only if I knew some  ) and constanly the errortext mentioned above appears on the screen after some interval.

Can someone advise what to do next? :)

P.S.: I checked my installation disk again and it was ok.

Hello !

It seems that the error saying "microcode "bcm43xx_microcode5.fw" not available or load failed" has something to do with your WiFi card and should not be a problem to run Ubuntu (it prevents you to use WiFi yet, but I guess it's not the point)

So the problem is likely related to X launch ... Could you please tell us ;ore about this X error ? what is shown on screen ?

Thanks and regards,
Benoît

Failed to start the X server (your graphical interface). It is likely that it is not set up correctly. Would you like to view the X server output to diagnose the problem?

Hello !

There is indeed a problem with X server ... It is a real problem for the installation, as on the LiveCD it won't be possible to edit the config files ... You might use the alternate CD (which provides text mode installer) to install the system and edit the config files afterward ...

The alternate CD is available on download page (there is a box you must check at the bottom) or at this location (I choose a random mirror) : ftp://ftp.easynet.be/ubuntu-iso/feisty/ubuntu-7.04-alternate-amd64.iso

Benoît

Done.

Installation permanently hangs up while installing software on this point:

"installed brltty-x11" (85%)

There are a few reports on that error with the feisty alternate cd on X64 systems. You might want to give it a few hours time, sometimes it worked after that. If it does not, please try to change the console (Alt-F(x)) to a console containing possible errors. Maybe we can get more information this way.

is there anything specific that has to be edited after installing using the alternate text-based installer?

Hi,

I had exactly the same "Problem" which is not realy a problem!

Laptop: Lenovo 3000N200
CPU: 1.8 Core2Duo
System: ubuntu-7.04-alternate-amd64.iso

Proplem: Installation permanently hangs up while installing software on this point: "installed brltty-x11" (85%)

Solution: WAIT - about 30min - the CD-drive starts to turn and installation goes on like there has been nothing :-)

Deathadder

Checking in the ALT-F4 terminal revealed that the system was having trouble finding the repositories from which to install;
a whole lot of in-target: failed to resolve "http://security.ubuntu.com", etc. Eventually it just gives up and does it anyhow. Whoever maintains the alternate CD needs to take a look at the repository information, or the networking at this point.

Can you help with this problem?
