Re-installing Thunderbird

Asked by srikumar

Have removed Thunderbird since it would not connect with my email provider and could not connect with a GMail account. Wanted to do a fresh install.

How to do a fresh install of Thunderbird.

Thank you.

You will see a config folder under ~/.mozilla for Thunderbird, you will need to rename that first. Removing and reinstalling the application does very little.

Thank you.

found 2 folders and 6 files using the search function with the name "Thunderbird". They cannot be renamed nor deleted the normal way. How to do this.

Is there a terminal command to do a clean removal of Thunderbird.
Since I have deleted Thunderbird, I need to do a fresh clean re-install. How to do this.

Thank you.

You have to understand the difference between the program files (in the system area) and the data files (inside your home directory tree) of thunderbird.

The program files are installed / uninstalled with package management commands.
The data files can be deleted with delete commands (or moved respectively renamed with mv commands).

For diagnostic purposes please provide the output of the command

uname -a
lsb_release -crid
dpkg -l | grep -I thunder
find ~ -iname '*thunder*' -ls

Oops. sorry, wrong autocorrect

The commands should be

uname -a
lsb_release -crid
dpkg -l | grep -i thunder
find ~ -iname '*thunder*' -ls
