16.04 Launch bar & Menu bar Lost

Asked by hummingbird on 2018-03-09

My launch bar & menu bar were lost after doing an update on March 6, 2018. The computer runs fine as a Guest login. I posted a comment on Question 665349 and tried the responses they suggested. But none fixed my computer. The terminal usually says 'No such file or directory'-- as when I typed in rm -r ~/. cache

Usually the software Updater pops up on the screen, (even when you are in the middle of something), One of my questions is CAN or WILL it still pop up with NO launch bar??? There's something to download almost everyday. But since Mar 6 around noon, the updater has NOT come on.

It sounds like the only fix is to download 17.10 OR go to another operating system--my husband says Linus MINT.

Is there a command to put in the terminal to start the computer from before I did the download on Mar6th?? I have almost everything backed up except my Bookmarks and I'd really like to get those.

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you, Andrew! I had to try it twice. I think I put in a space in the first time, that wasn't supposed to be there. But when I put it in again and rebooted, the desktop came up with the bars. I was so shocked, I had to do a double take. I've been worrying with this for 4 1/2 days, I can;t tell you how many times the computer was restarted. You are the first one to give me the answer for my computer!! If this was given as a fix before, I must have put it in wrong. As nothing had made any difference. I'm NOT sure why this happened, but I'm holding my breath it doesn't happen again. I think I may go ahead with an upgrade or change Operating systems. Too afraid it'll happen again. I want to get AWAY from Unity!!!

Hopefully, this will help someone else also. Have a Very Nice Weekend. Keep up the GOOD work.
