Ubuntu 17.10 with Gnome freeze

Asked by Pawel Nartowski

Ubuntu freeze few times a day. In most cases black screen with few lines of error like

[42017.884377] [drm:drm_atomic_helper_commit_cleanup_done [drm_kms_helper]] *ERROR* [CRTC:39:pipe B] flip_done timed out
[42028.124405] [drm:drm_atomic_helper_commit_cleanup_done [drm_kms_helper]] *ERROR* [CRTC:39:pipe B] flip_done timed out
[42038.364534] [drm:drm_atomic_helper_commit_cleanup_done [drm_kms_helper]] *ERROR* [CRTC:39:pipe B] flip_done timed out
[42048.860507] [drm:drm_atomic_helper_commit_cleanup_done [drm_kms_helper]] *ERROR* [CRTC:39:pipe B] flip_done timed out

are shown. After 1 minute to 2 minutes of freeze login screen is displayed and I'm able to log in, but all application previously opened are disappeared.
I found a similar problem and proposed solution was to add
video=SVIDEO-1:d to GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT

but it doesn't solve my problem.
Please help it's really annoying.

I guess it s a desktop environment issue.i suggest that you install unity from recovery option then apt-get update and apt-get upgrade then login.one of the perfect environments is gnome but in 16.04.3 lts which is supported till 2021.with gnome.it doesn't crash.backup your data and try it.

Have you tested your RAM using Memtest86 from GRUB? This is a good starting point.

Thanks for help. I've followed Annas suggestions that problem is related to Gnome.
I changed gdm to lightdm. Also on the login screen, there is the icon which gives a possibility to pick Window Manager and I've changed it from Gnome to Ubuntu on Xorg. After one day of work, I haven't anyone crash.
