Skype is not available from Ubuntu official repositories as it is a proprietary software.

You can download it from:
http://www.skype.com/download/skype/linux/choose/
Save it in your Home/Personal Folder.
And then follow this FAQ to install it:

Also, make sure you choose the right package for your P.C. (i.e. i386, 64bit, LPIA). This may have been an issue. I am not sure what exactly was the original problem was.

Following Arnaud's instructions and picking the correct architecture you should be "A okay."

Let us know if you need any help.

suzanne, there is a site

http://www.medibuntu.org/

pls take a look and see what it is ; if you decide to go ahead using its repos then follow

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Medibuntu

personally I'm using v often its repos to get skype installed on various ubuntu releases - it works v well;

I just noticed that skype is available for lpia architecture too (mind you I never tried it on lpia) but I heard that it works great. give it a try and let us know the results - it'll help other users.

regards,
peter b
