sudden slow down of write speed on USB pendrive

Asked by Rick Miller

About 2 weeks ago, I noticed a major reduction in write speed on this Kingston DT101G 2.0 16Gb pendrive. Then about 3-5 days after, 2 more of my drives encountered the same slowdown. I've run a plethora of tests and so-called "fixes" with no results. After all the tests and such, I do not believe the problem is in the USB ports. The drives can be written to and the read speeds are what they always were originally, so the drives are not toast!!! Something's altered their ability to write at their original factory speeds. None of the drives are very old, only used moderately and always have been removed properly. Right now, the Kingston writes @ 1.8Mb/s (avg.) It used to write in the 7-8+Mb/s range. So, here's what I'd like to accomplish #1. If possible, identify what caused the drives slowdown #2. restore the drives to their original operating speeds. https://askubuntu.com/questions/122113/copy-to-usb-memory-stick-really-slow & https://askubuntu.com/questions/299430/slow-usb-transfer-speeds?r are threads that I want to respond to, but am having trouble with??? Side note: how does one PM anyone here and/or at the askUbuntu forums?

If anyone is interested in this thread and needs further information, please request. I've done so many "tests" and the likes that I doubt they"d let me post it all in here LOL. Oh, lastly, I was using a Dell Optiplex 9020~Intel i5 and Win7 when drives developed speed loss.. I have access to a machine that runs LM 18. and I'd rather use it, but can run the Win7 if required

Shaking my Head:
Rick

How old is the device?
What file system are you using?
Have you tried a different USB port?
Is it slow in other systems?

Hey Andrew:

18 mos.(aprox.) Fat32 Yes Yes. [Runs a bit faster in Win 10 & LM 18.3, but still very slow]

Evening Andrew:

Really appreciate you taking the time to help!!! Uhm... doing something wrong for when I paste mount; lsb_release -a; uname -a
it gives the output of LM 18 Sylvia. What am I missing? Should I have to command the terminal to mount sdc? (C being the pendrive, but you probably knew that). And, ran 'speed tests" on all my pendrives and found 2 more with horrible write speeds. I'm getting more and more suspicious that it has something to do with Win7. And, one of those drives I found to be ailing I hadn't used in about 6 mos., well before this recent wave of anomalies. And last, one of the drives, and the only one, had both read/write deficiencies. Well, back to the net to see what, if anything, I can discover.

ThanX:
Rick

Linux Mint is not supported by the Ubuntu community in any way. Its community is entirely separate from Ubuntu's.

Your distribution is supported by the Mint community. Their forum is here
https://forums.linuxmint.com

None of the "Ubuntu based" distributions are supported by the Ubuntu community or Canonical.

Really??? This answer is beneath what I'd come to expect from you.

Yes, really! because this is Ubuntu support and not Mint support. There are distribution agnostic forums. This isn't one of them.

Why do you not accept that this is support for Ubuntu only?
Already more than years ago actionparsnip has tried to make clear that you have to contact the Linux Mint forums.
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/software-center/+question/254067

To give an additional explanation:
Linux Mint has added its own program packages for a number of tasks. We do not know anything about them, and so we cannot help.

Can you help with this problem?
