Toshi Satell - Wireless 3945ABC [ Golan ] not working correctly

Asked by Wim

Hello folks,

i was running Xubuntu 14.04 on a Toshiba Satellite A100,
built in is a PRO / Wireless 3945ABC [ Golan ] wireless networkcard.

* wifi - problem *

When i am trying to connect to a wifi network, several (old) laptops work OK,
but this Toshi Satellite A100 is continuesly making wireless connection (seen in turning network icon right above)
and almost directly loosing its wireless connection again. (changing network icon again in double arrow)
And again trying to make a wireless connection.

The same is happening in other wifi networks.

The same is happening when i am also Cat5-wired-Connected through the eth1 (an Intel PRO/100 VE Network Connection)

# -- ps -ef shows that driver iwl3945 (for PRO Wireless 3945ABC) is running,

i notice a strange thing: wired connection is named eth1 (and not eth0)
and the wifi connection is renamed wlan1 (and not wlan0) during boot process
(( * Where to change this ? * ))

* wifi - solution *

The answer 271979 from Nick on Launchpad (see below) worked for 14.04.5 LTS, and stayed working.

This month the laptop was upgraded to xUbuntu 16.04.3 LTS ...

Nick's suggestion worked only very shortly ONE time in 16.04.3 (rkfill , reinstall firmware , reboot)
After this first time i cannot connect wireless using the built-in Intel PRO Wireless 3945ABC Golan ...

i tried:
+ rfkill & reinstall linux-firmware & reboot
+ idem & cat5-wired connection
+ idem & switch wifi OFF and after several minutes ON again
+ booting using wifi-switch OFF, and switching on several minutes after login

Nothing seems to work in the upgraded version 16.04 ...

Any suggestions are appreciated.

Thanks,
Wim

Hello,

please make sure the WiFi device is not Off from a hardware switch.

    Hard blocked: yes
Above message means that the WiFi is switched off. Try a key combination like Fn + some Function Key (F8..) and see if this wakes the WiFi.

You can always check for "Hard block" state with the following command

    sudo rfkill list all

Also, if above does not work, make sure you have an Internet connection (you can connect temporarily via Ethernet) and execute the following command to re-install the firmware.

    sudo apt-get install --reinstall linux-firmware

Reboot your system and see if it worked.

Regards
NickTh

If you run:

sudo modprobe -rv iwl3945
sudo modprobe -v iwl3945 disable_hw_scan=1

Is it better? If so, we can make the setting stick

After those commands there came no wifi-connection,
tried this:
.1. selecting my wifi-network in nm-connection icon (near the clock) : NO success
(i got telephone, and meanwhile i see the icon turning, stating that the wifi-connection is trying
to be completed) : NO success

.2. re-tried the previous solution of Nick ( rfkill list all ; apt-get reinstall linux-firmware ) :
phy0 wLan is NOT soft NOR hard blocked
NO success, so i tried again to connect using the network-icon : also NO success

.3. my last try will be: a reboot, so this answer end here...

(for now: my thanks for your help)

After reboot i logged in and did nothing:
laptop tried 3 times to connect to my wifi network : NO success
(by the way, several old laptops using 14.04 and 16.04 connect to it very quick; different types: HP, Acer, etc.)

in the network-icon i selected my wifi network, a new try is done : NO success

.4. i use the switch on the PC to switch off (hard) the wifi in the laptop
waited 5 min. and put the wifi-switch ON again : NO success
after a few minutes i selected my wifi network in the icon again : NO success

.5. in the network-icon i DEselected the item "wifi network on" , waited few minutes and
selected the item "wifi network on" again : NO sucess, now even the try to connect the wifi network is not done.

So i think i have tried all possible ways to connect, without success.

# -- extra info:
this laptop is using XUbuntu from 12.04 (or even 10.04) on, always LTS-versions.
BUT
because a malfunction of CD-drive,
i installed the first version on THIS hard disk in an other laptop.

After placing the Hard Disk in this one again, everything worked,
until last week i upgraded 14.04.5 to 16.04.3 ...

Is this " installation on Hard Disk in an other PC " the reason that ETH0 is now ETH1 and wlan0 is now wlan1 ?
And can that be the reason
why connection in 16.04 cannot be established again ?

I am just giving extra info...

In short:

in xUbuntu-14.04.5-LTS the Wireless 3945ABC [ Golan ] was working, due to the solution Nick Athens 30 gave in http://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-nettool/+question/271979 .

But after upgrade to xUbuntu-16.04-LTS no Wireless connection can be made.

HardWare is working, because booting from a 14.04-USB-stick gives the possibility to connect wireless.

Suggestions are rally appreciated!

Suggestions:

1. For diagnostic purposes please follow https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WirelessTroubleshootingProcedure pasting all output into this question document that you have already created

2. web search for this device shows up some recommendations for additional options when loading the driver like
bt_coex_active=0 swcrypto=1 11n_disable=8

and/or changing "wifi.powersave = 3" into "wifi.powersave = 2" in /etc/NetworkManager/conf.d/default-wifi-powersave-on.conf

3. What you could try is downloading an Ubuntu 18.04 installer, booting from it and testing whether the device works on the future Ubuntu 18.04

Hello folks,

more information:

18.04-Beta1 seems not solving the problem:

created a bootable USB with xUbuntu-18.04-Beta1 iso (dated march 7th),
booted using this USB and selected "Try xUbuntu"
i can not connect wireless to any wLAN;
so probably only upgrading to 18.04 (end april) seems not the solution for this problem.

( as a work-around i could do:

- backup /home/*
- format HDisk
- do a new 12.04 ! install
- update & upgrade to 14.04
- restore /home/*

But then this problem feels not really solved for me...)

So i am looking forward for your suggestions.

It seems that you misinterpreted my suggestion

"2. web search for this device shows up some recommendations for additional options when loading the driver like bt_coex_active=0 swcrypto=1 11n_disable=8
and/or changing "wifi.powersave = 3" into "wifi.powersave = 2" in /etc/NetworkManager/conf.d/default-wifi-powersave-on.conf"

Only the "wifi.powersave = 2" part belongs into /etc/NetworkManager/conf.d/default-wifi-powersave-on.conf"

The other options should go into a file /etc/modprobe.d/iwl3945.conf:
options iwl3945 swcrypto=0

(it seems that the other options are not applicable to the iwl3945 driver, only to iwlwifi)

Why do you consider doing a 12.04 install and then upgrade it to 14.04? An installation from the 14.04 media should do the same with less effort.

Another possibility could be to try installing the newest available kernel version and check whether it is working with that one.

Manfred,

really thanks for for effort.

In short:
* applying the change "wifi.powersave = 2" in /etc/NetworkManager/conf.d/default-wifi-powersave-on.conf
and / or
* creating the file /etc/modprobe.d/iwl3945.conf with the only line "options iwl3945 swcrypto=0" (without quotation-signs)
* creating the file /etc/modprobe.d/iwl3945.conf with the only line "options iwl3945 swcrypto=1" (without quotation-signs)
does not help to keep the connection (used in the currently install on HDisk: xUbuntu-16.04.4

Booting from the new created USB-stick with xUbuntu-18.04-Beta1
doesn't give the possibility to keep the connection either
(used some tries we did before in 16.04.4; see above)

In the past this PC was loaded with 12.04.2 and later on upgraded to 14.04;
in that path the solution of Nick (mentioned before) seems to be working.

I do not know whether a fresh installation of 14.04 gives the same situation as installation of 12.04, update, and release-upgrade to 14.04 ... And xUbuntu-installation is real quick (even on these old laptops) that i do not bother to take this "longer way" to a solution.

But as stated before:
i hope we can find a stable solution in version 16.04 (or 18.04), because that give us the possibility to keep all programs recent.

Hai folks,

i installed a new HardDisk in the Toshiba laptop,
created 3 partitions ( root-/ , home and swap)
and installed xUbuntu-16.04.4 LTS (using a new hostname)
The local wLAN-s were shown,
but: using the built-in GoLan cannot complete connect to my (hidden wLAN).

Tried something else:
borrowed an old USB-wireless stick MSI US54SE WireLess 11g USB-stick

Using this stick the connection with hidden wLAN is quickly performed.

My conclusion:
(because booting from xUbuntu-14.04.4 LTS worked)

somehow the combination
xUbuntu-16.04 (and 18.04-Beta1) and PRO / Wireless 3945ABC [ Golan ] wireless networkcard
is not handshaking correctly.

Question:
What is changed after xUbuntu-14.04-LTS ?
and
How to "restore" the old situation in 16.04 (and 18.04) ?
???

All suggestions are appreciated, because we all want to enjoy our Ubuntu-versions.
