Ubuntu 12.04 is end of life and no longer supported in any way. I suggest you wipe the install off and do a clean install of Xenial. Xenial is LTS and supported until April 2021. You will also be able to upgrade directly to Bionic (Ubuntu 18.04) in April this year which is supported until April 2023.

If you are feeling brave then you can install Bionic now and you will upgrade to the release candidate.

Ubuntu 12.04 LTS can be changed to 12.04 ESM (extended security maintenance) which is supported by Canonical, but it requires payment and support is available by phone/email/... 12.04 LTS was released in 2012.April (hence the12.04) with five (5) years of support and is now well past EOL. You could release-upgrade to 14.04 LTS too.
