AMD Driver Freeze on Startup Ubuntu 17.10

Asked by Tom Leys

Installed new 17.10 as a dual-boot option (with Win 10) on my SSD, on an old Desktop PC (~2010).

PC almost reaches login screen and freezes after entering graphical mode - with a cursor. I'd expect my name is about to appear to log in. Ctrl-alt-F2 etc do not work.

Entering Recovery mode boots okay.

I was directed on this page to run this diagnostic command and put the results here, so here I am. https://help.ubuntu.com/community/GraphicsTroubleshootingProcedure

Please tell me how to configure the drivers so I can boot correctly.

Thanks

Did you create an xorg.conf file for the system or are you letting autoconfigure do it's thing.

I also suggest you test your RAM using Memtest86 from GRUB. It may show issues

Andrew,

I have not created a manual xorg.conf file. So I guess it would be autoconfigure'd.

Yes, the memory test was successful and found no issues.

This seems strange:

  *-display UNCLAIMED
        description: VGA compatible controller
product: Cypress PRO [Radeon HD 5850]

There is no driver loaded for your display adapter.

I see that you tried to install some kind of andgpu-pro driver. ("Get:1 file:/var/opt/amdgpu-pro-local ./ InRelease")
Maybe something went wrong there. Where did you get the related instructions?

Maybe you should try reverting to the standard Ubuntu-provided drivers?

Thanks Manfred

I believe what you see there is due to starting in recovery mode. If I boot outside recovery mode it uses Radeon (the built in drivers) and locks up.

I did indeed install amdgpu-pro, however it made the situation worse so I removed it again using apt-get uninstall.

1. Fresh install of Ubuntu, exhibited bug
2
. Added amdgpu-pro (using recovery mode). Boot up was worse
3. Remove amdgpu-pro, again from recovery mode
4. Bug returns, behavior as before.
5. Using recovery mode, ran diagnostic commands.

Is there a good command to capture diagnostic output from the previous boot? I'm not familiar with the relevant log files.

Hi Tom,

I have a similar issue with Ubuntu 19.10 USB installer.

platform gpio_ich.1.auto: failed to claim resource 0

Did you end up solving your issue?

I completed Ubuntu 19.10 installation by CTRL+ALT+F1 during Ubuntu boot screen, selecting to try Ubuntu Live in safe graphics mode, then running the installation process (selecting to install third party graphics drivers as well). First boot after installation was successful.
