Installation step failed while installing Ubuntu 14.04 on QEMU

Asked by Ibad Khan

I have QEMU installed in a VM on which I'm trying to install Ubuntu server; configuration is 2GB RAM and 2GB disk.

The purpose is to create an image out of it because the QEMU image shared by Ubuntu isn't fitting our need, we need to have SSH and root login enabled.

Now that I am trying to configure the server, it reaches "Select and install software" and fail with error "Installation step failed" due to some unknown reason.

I've tried both mini and server image, apparently both resulted in same state. Tried to look into the logs after aborting installation, but couldn't find anything under /var/log folder.

Looking forward for some help.

Are you installing software as part of the installation of the OS or is this something else please?

If it's part of the initial installation then don't bother. Just get the OS installed and you can add services as you require.

I suggest you keep root login disabled and create a new user with access, for, example, to SFTP data outside of /home

It will help to harden your system

If you are getting issues during installation, did you MD5 test the ISO you downloaded? You don't need to do this if you pulled the ISO down using torrents as the protocol adds a lot of error checking.

Yes, it's during installation of the OS. And I tried to skip the step and proceed to GRUB installation, but that failed as well.

Regarding MD5 test, that's positive. I've downloaded it manually and have verified MD5 of the file and it's same.

As part of learning, how do I download ISO using torrent as protocol?

Download the torrent file instead of the ISO and open it in your favourite torrent client. The data is the same but the download method is different

Are there any videos on YouTube explaining extra configuration you can use?

Ah, it's just like downloading any other torrents. My bad, I thought using torrents is generally frowned upon.

Nope, there aren't any videos. If you're looking for steps to reproduce, I followed the ones mentioned here https://docs.openstack.org/image-guide/ubuntu-image.html ; created a 2G qcow2 image instead of 10G.

Why is it frowned upon. Its just a different way to download data. Downloading copyrighted material is frowned upon and frequently done via torrents but Ubuntu is open source and free so there is no issue. You can download copyrighted material using HTTP just like you did with your Ubuntu ISO you downloaded.

Its not the protocol that is the issue, its the content you download using it

Gotcha! Since MD5 check passed, should I try downloading ISO through torrent and attempt again?
