Hi,

it seems we use the same audio device (I have an ASUS W7J). Try to put the following line in the "/etc/modprobe/options" file:

options snd-hda-intel model=3stack

and reboot the system.

Hoping this will solve your problem!

is that "/etc/mpdprobe/options" correct.?
gives error message " could not find the file ".

and i tried with /etc/modprobe.d/options (may be the right, correct if i am wrong)
added options snd-hda-intel model =3stack
and rebooted.
still no sound.

Hi Madan,

You may be experiencing the following old bug:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/136469
http://www.linlap.com/wiki/Toshiba+Satellite+P105

So you can try two things to try to fix the sound issue:

1. upgrade your BIOS to a version higher than v3.80
2. boot with acpi=off kernel option

# Open a terminal and enter the following command:

sudo gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst

# in the line looking something like that:

kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.18-3-amd64 root=/dev/sda1 ro noapic

# you can add "acpi=off" at the end of the line so that it looks like this:

kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.18-3-amd64 root=/dev/sda1 ro acpi=off noapic

Hope it will work. I can't test it.

Reboot your pc and then retest sound.

If sound is still not working, you can get the latest BIOS update for your laptop here:

http://www.csd.toshiba.com/cgi-bin/tais/support/jsp/modelContent.jsp?ct=SB&os=&category=&moid=1364117&rpn=PSPA6U&modelFilter=P105-S9312&selCategory=3&selFamily=1073768663

Direct download link:

http://cdgenp01.csd.toshiba.com/content/support/downloads/sp100v470.exe

You will need to make a boot floppy and put the BIOS update file on it, boot from the floppy disk and flash your BIOS.

Regards,

Mark

Hi madan,

You're welcome. You need to upgrade your BIOS IF and only IF you want to have acpi (power management) and sound working simultaneously. But flashing your computer's BIOS is considered risky business. If you lose power to the pc right in the middle of a BIOS flash, the pc becomes a dead duck ;-)

Mark

oops!!!
sound works great,
yes, i agreed your point, updating bios is risky thing.
now, i guess the problem is in power management .
"plug" icon (indicates power source) at the panel , also disappear.
battery indicator greyed out.
and there is no power history graph.
i will look around forums get to fix this without updating bios.
will be helpfull if you show some direction on this too.
thanks mark.

Hi :)

Please re-post this as a new question
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/alsa-driver/+addquestion
you can always post a link back into this question to save you reposting the large output you have already given above
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/alsa-driver/+question/66426

Unlike most forums Launchpad does not 'bump' threads and is set-up to make posting new questions much much better than keeping going with an old thread.

Is your machine the same one as described in the question? If so then updating the bios seemed to do the trick so you might want to post a 2nd question about how to do that. If it is not the same then i would avoid updating the bios unless you know what you are doing or can get help from a shop or something. Mostly doing stuff yourself is fine but the bios is a critical and flaky part of almost any system. Not a great combination! I would tend to swap the hard-drive in the machine for a cheap old one and quickly stick Ubuntu on it and then hand it over to a shop so that the update gets done with their insurance in case of troubles. I don't like handing over my valuable data to shops which is one reason i hold onto old drives from previous machines. Asking multiple questions about different things is the best approach in Launchpad.

Also you might find that copying the question into the other main forums might help with this
http://www.ubuntuforums.com
http://www.linuxquestions.org
The latter of these is 'upstream' from Ubuntu and deals with a lot of different distros, such as Mandriva, Slackware (not just with Ubuntu). Since sound is not distro-specific you might find you get some good answers from there although details about gui menus are slightly different in different distros. Many answerers work in 2 or more of these forums.

I hope something here has been helpful!
Good luck and regards from
Tom :)
