Terminal won't open in Ubuntu 17.10

Asked by AJ Shadrach on 2018-02-10

I am running Ubuntu 17.10 and when I try to open the terminal or files (nautilus) they won't open. The cursor shows that it's trying to load something but then just stops after about 10 seconds as if I didn't click anything. This problem only happens with terminal and files. Everything else works fine, chrome, firefox, thunderbird, ubuntu software. I've tried restarting my system but that didn't help.

If you press CTRL + ALT + T does it load OK?

Thanks

Sorry, I meant to include that in my original post. No, ctrl+alt+T does not work. It doesn't even try to load when I try ctrl+alt+T.

If you press ALT + F2 and run:

xterm

Does it run OK?

No, it says command not found.

Install xterm using software centre and run it. You can always press CTRL + ALT + F1 and install it there. You can use CTRL + ALT + F7 to get back to the GUI

This works as an alternative. Files still doesn't open but I can use xterm to move, change and create things. Thank you.
