can a GMail email account be accessed from Thunderbird

Thank you. Read through and followed the instructions.
The set up process does not accept the password and therefore cannot yet set it up. The password is accepted by Gmail to access Gmail over the internet but is not accepted by the set up process.

If the password which you deem correct does not work, are you using the correct username?

The user name is the same in both cases.
Will go through the above links and look for a solution.
