Ubuntu installation error on ASUS E402S

Asked by Stefano

I would like to install UBUNTU 16.x or 17.x (got same issue with both) on an ASUS E402S having the following hardware:
> RAM 4Gb
> SSD 30Gb where there is installed Widows 10 .Home edition
> SCSI HD 1Tb having two partitions .. In the smaller one (80Gb) I would like to install Ubuntu (so by keeping Windows10 on the SSD)

Set up both installation USB (Through Rufus) and a DVD.
Changed the machine BIOS settings so to properly boot from the USB (I have an external USB DVD R&W driver)

I can properly run the UBUNTU from the USB stick (and the same from the DVD )

I then started the Ubuntu installation with the ida of installing it in the 80Gb partition of the SCSI disk
at this 1st installation attempt, everything was OK .. and I could access to the "installation type" page, where I selected the option <Something else>

the I could access to the device detail settings (sd0..sd1..sd2.. and so on).. But not sure about the file system setting to be selected I then stopped the installation (so to repeat it later, once attended some tutorials about this subject matter)

After attending a tutorial I then wanted to retry the installation... BUT I then entered in the following stall-mate:
Installation got stuck on page <preparing to install Ubuntu> (where to select "download updates and install 3rd part SW..)
Basically, after selecting to download both (but I got same issue also without selecting them) I am getting a pop-up window showing <???????> and then installation stucks there.

Tried to repeat the installation with both Ubuntu relases 16x and 17x... and from both USB stick or the DVD
USB stick reloaded many times through the Rufus... it seems OK, since I can run Ubuntu from there.. but on all cases I cannot complete the installation steps.

Any hints or suggestion? (as you could realize I am a beginner with Ubuntu)
thanks in advance

I am a beginner with Ubuntu. This is your statement. Please check site below. The two numbers to right of the dot is very important. Also important to MD5s your ISO. Second site below.

Michel thanks

Release is confirmed as 16.04.3 LTS
the relevant "Md5Sum compare result" is also confirming that ISO dowload is OK (ashes are identical)

the strange thing to me is that 1st installation attempt was OK (the one I stopped for the above listed reason).. then I cannot anymore reach/access to that installation step.. as described in my 1st message.

I believe you did best by installing 16.04.03. Not sure what the problem is. I have never used Rufus, know nothing about it, have read others have used successfully. When you are The Try Ubuntu, click on GParted to see how the partitions are. You will need to use one of programs like Imageshack, Postimage.org, Pastebin. See site below for alternative sites.

Michael,

I think Rufus is Ok...
Thanks to the GParted you suggested to use, I could see that all disks can be properly read... BUT there is a problem to mount all of them.
I went through the error log an the following detail is interesting:

<< ERROR Mounting /dev/sdax ..... the disk contains an unclean file system (0,0)
Metadata kept in Windows cache, refused to mount....... >>

this is the same for both the HDDs

is it possible that during the 1st installation attempt (the one I stopped) something remained written in the Windows cache .. which then jeopardizes any additional attempt to mount the disks?

Another interesting thing is that when running Ubuntu from the USB disk.. it works.. BUT I cannot save any file on both the HDDs.
Again it is a mounting failure!

"the disk contains an unclean file system
Metadata kept in Windows cache, refused to mount"

This is the message that you receive if you try accessing a Disk from a Windows system, where Windows has not been completely shut down, but only has been put to sleep (or hybrid sleep) mode.

Start Windows again, disable fast boot (search the web for details), fully shut down Windows and then try accessing the disk again.

Manfred, thanks, your suggestion helped to go toward the right direction.

Windows fast boot is now disabled.. then I really can save files to all the laptod HDDs.

But Ubuntu installation issue still remains.

I don't know how I could run it the first (when I aborted it to better investigate on the options... but maybe the Windows "shut-down" has different settings comparing the "restart" from the "fast boot" point of view.. and maybe I used sometimes one.. and some other times the other.. so I experienced that mount issues only in some cases..
But now fast boot is disabled and I can always access to the HDDsfrom Ubuntu lunched from the USB drive.

Then coming back to the installtion issue... well I still get that pop-up window with the "question marks" that causes the installation to abort.
But in some cases I also get another pop-up window stating the following:

<< System Program Problem Detected... The following drive have some partitions mounted /dev/mmcblk0>>

then either I select "allow program to umount" .. or NOT.. well the installation fails reporting that "??????" Error on the pop-up window.
