Problems installing ubuntu on mac; KASLR disabled and junk in compressed archive

Asked by Anne O.

I am starting a bioinformatics course this monday for which I need Linux. I have tried to install it on my macbook pro (2015; OS X El Capitan 10.11.6) using Virtualbox. After getting an initial error (kernel requires an x86 64 cpu but only detected an i686 cpu) and fixing this by setting 'type' and 'version' to other I then got this error and do not know how to fix this.

KASLR disabled: could not find suitable E820 region!

[0.201290] Initramfs unpacking failed: junk in compressed archive
[0.377962] Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS Unable to mount root fs on unknown block (0,0)

There are a bunch more problems, I took a screenshot but don't know how to post it.

Can anybody please help me? I am new, have already spent 1,5 hours trying to fix this and am feeling pretty hopeless right now.

Any help is much appreciated!

You either don't have VT-x in your CPU or it's not enabled.

If you don't have this then you will need the 32bit ISO to install on your system

This is what I thought but when I go to the toolbar below the black screen, the second box going left next to the down arrow (u in a square) states that the VT-x / AMD-V is active. Or is this something different?

I checked using terminal, VT-x is installed. Another forum said the default voor VT-x is 'active' on MacBooks.

That's what is causing the issue. Could just install the 32bit ISO.

According to google I do this by updating to the newest software. I did this and the problem remained. Any other things I can try?

Is VT-x enabled in the settings of the VM?
What is the main purpose of the VM once you get it running?

Sounds like it's not active. Check in BIOS.

Is the course able to be ran in a 32bit VM? You could try parallels or QEMU as an alternative

When I go to detailed settings in VirtualBox it states VT-x is active on the VM.
The purpose of the VM would be to use Linux for metagenome analysis (required for the course).

"junk in compressed archive" sounds for me as if something went wrong during installation - probably during creation of the intramfs file.
Maybe re-creating the initramfs file helps, eventually you should also try reinstalling grub.

Can you help with this problem?
