Ubuntu Installation CD Integrity Check error

Asked by Aleksey Shcherbakov

Hi,

I am trying to install Ubuntu. I tried both 8.10 and 8.04.2. I tried few different sources downloading ISO images, including http://releases.ubuntu.com/hardy/. No matter where I download them from or to what machine (both home and office) the ISO file md5sum shows correct value when compared to UbuntuHashes (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuHashes#). But every installation CD Integrity Check completes with the same message: "Check finished: errors found in 1 files!".

I have read Solved Question #38312 and followed the recommendations. No luck...

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Can you try a different distro, see i you get the same effect? A tiny distro would be good for this. I'd try Wolvix Cub or Hunter
http://distrowatch.com/table.php?distribution=wolvix
Please let us know how it goes with this.

Also there's some guidance on making the cd

Good luck and regards from

Thanks for a quick response, Tom. I will update this thread after I try Wolvix Cub's distro.

The good news is I got the CD without errors. But here comes the question: how long should it take to create a partition? It sits for 90 minutes and it does not look doing anything... even a doughnut does not spin.

Creating a partition shouldnt take that long. Its probably an error.

Hmmm, i'm wondering if there's something wrong with the cd-drive itself?!

Please can you try the Wolvix Cd and let it boot up without installing anything. Also try the Ubuntu Cd the same way although following the default option to "Try Ubuntu without installing anything" in Ubuntu's case.
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BootFromCD

Do either of them get you to a working desktop? If it works we call it a LiveCd session. Please let us know if either or neither or just one of them works and we'll try to help from there.

Regards and good luck from
Tom :)

Booting up this way should take about 5-10minutes at the very most, Cub should be much faster than that.

My cd-drive is definitely messed up: it opens and closes the cd-tray on it's own, so I cannot boot from it. Since I have both cd-drive and dvd-drive I tried to install Ubuntu from dvd-drive. The installation did not go well. I was not able to open a Live Session from error free CD eitherl. But... I easily opened up a Live Session from the CD I burned myself which does not pass the Integrity Check.
On the other hand, I tried the error free CD on the other machine and was able to open a Live Session there.

So, I feel confused and am afraid I am confusing you guys too...

Ok, it sounds like you have successfully made a couple of Ubuntu Cd's there. Hopefully you still have the iso image you made the Cd's from? If so i think we need to try using something other than your cd or dvd drives in order to

1. Get to a Live session to check what the partitioning on your drive looks like
2. Install Ubuntu without using the Cd or Dvd drives

So, do you have an Usb stick of about 4Gb or over? or do both machines connect to a network where they could see each other or do you have a "crossed pair ethernet cable". I think the easiest way is the Usb route because people ask questions about it more so we could probably help more.

https://help.ubuntu.com/8.04/installation-guide/i386/installation-howto.html

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation#Installation%20without%20a%20CD

As you can see from this last link there are a lot of different ways we could install Ubuntu without using a cd :) Just let us know which one you want to try and we'll try to help you through.

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

Yes, I have an Usb stick of 8 GB and I would like to try it as an alternative method. I looked through the link you've provided and the following made me slightly doubtful - "To prepare the USB stick, you will need a system where GNU/Linux is already running and where USB is supported." ( https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/FromUSBStick ) since I do not have one yet.
But I am ready to try.

I think you can use a LiveCd session on the machine that lets you do that & then run the Usb creator tool from that.

I haven't tried doing this yet so i could easily be wrong but it seems that you have to copy all the files from the LiveCd session. I would do this by going up to the "Places" menu - "Documents" and then click on the Up button a few times until reaching the / folder, ie the one after /home. Then use "View" to see all the hidden files, if there are any (i don't think there are any in there) and CtrlA to select everything and then drag it all onto the Usb stick.

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

Dohh, sorry about that. It might be worth posting a new question about installing Ubuntu onto a usb stick because i have no experience of doing this yet. I'm sure someone at the front-desk will have more experience and be able to help
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+addquestion

To get permissions you might need to do this as Root so go up to the top taskbar and click on

Applications - Accessories - Terminal

and into the terminal/command window/console type

sudo nautilus

it will ask for your normal user password, not your SuperUser/Root one and it wont shopw any stars as you type in the password, just to keep it even safer. Please close the file-browser console as soon as you have finished copying stuff to the Usb stick. It's easy to forget and keep working with it which makes things much more difficult later.

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

There's another person trying to install to Usb

https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/66920

It would be better if you both post questions about this rather than relying on the other person to do so. We have alsorts of tricks for dealing with similar questions, such as Copy&paste lol
