https://developers.hp.com/hp-linux-imaging-and-printing/supported_devices/index

your printer is supported by HPLIP 2.8.2 and later, so should work.

If you remove the printer from Ubuntu and power of the printer then reboot the system, log in and power the printer does it setup OK?

Thank you for the response.

Did the above as instructed. The printer is shown as under "Devices" but
settings>devices>additional printer settings>printer>all the menu items are grey other than for view print queue

any suggestions?

I remember that on an earlier occasion there was a "requires a proprietory plug in". But not this time since the recommended "Foomatic" driver was chosen.
Is the proprietory plugin required and is there a way to install this.
Thank you

found the following solution in the Internet:-

Run command : sudo hp-setup -i and then follow the instructions for installation
but first delete the printer and then run this command.

The HP P1005 Printer now works.

This question may now be closed.
Thank you.
