Is it 700MHz with the original 512Mb ram?
Is this the one?

I think that's above min.spec so it should be ok but the fact the machine started with ME suggest we need a lighter inux distro and Ubuntu is one of the heaviest (also most feature-rich of course). There's a lot of different ones available. Can you just boot up off the Ubuntu Cd? Try "Try Ubuntu without installing anything" at the menu and see if you get to a working desktop comparable to Xp. We call this a "LiveCd session" and its always a good idea to try a linux this way first before installing. A guide to help bootup

Please let us know if Ubuntu's LiveCd work for you.

Puppy doesn't work on some configurations of hardware in which case i almost always find that Wolvix Hunter does work.

Kubuntu is likely to be too heavy for quite a lot of machines but Xubuntu is a bit lighter and very similar to Ubuntu. If the Wolvix LiveCd works then maybe give Xubuntu a try. If Wolvix Hunter doesn't work then TinyCore or sliTaz are extremely tiny distro's and sliTaz has some nice applications included right from the start whereas TinyCore needs some building up.

Hope this gives you some useful ideas to try. Please let us know and we'll try to help you get Ubuntu on your machine if we can.
Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

where did the install fail that is very important and sometimes a simple workaround available

Are you running anything special

How are you attempting the install

LiveCD is a very standard method that works for most
