check internet connection

Just installed Ubuntu 12 from CD. Now I intend upgrading but despite internet connectivity for Google and other sites, progress on application installation halts with the message "check internet connection".

Ubuntu 12.04.5 LTS came to the end of its life April 2017.

A more recent release would be better. 16.04.03 LTS will last until April 2021.

Quantal is no longer supported and there are no packages for it. It's like looking for updates for Windows 98. I suggest you wipe the installation off and do a clean install of Xenial. Xenial is LTS and supported until April 2021.
