installation failure 17.04 17.10

Asked by Bob Bowden

As a result of the 16.04 compiz(?) bug on older boxes (I think mine is 2007 vintage), I was trying to install 17.04 or 17.10 to try to get "past" the problem. Both failed to install with an error something like "failed to install grub on /dev/dm-0" (I think that's right). In both cases, alternates such as /dev/sda1 were offered, but nothing happened after I selected them.

Sysinfo shows HP Pavilion dv6700 (it'd be real "handy" if I could cut&paste that info)

Are you using RAID in some form?
Did you MD5 test the ISO you downloaded?
If you are using optical media did you burn the disk as slowly as possible?
Are you setting up a dual boot or will Ubuntu be the only OS on the system? Do you have the latest BIOS?

not using RAID, but I did select LVM -- didn't occur to me to try without it

yes, I did verify the md5 sum (on both)

attempting to install from a USB stick

Ubuntu is the only OS

yes, it's the latest BIOS

What kind of disk layout do you want?
FAT or GPT partitioning?
BIOS or UEFI boot?
An extra /home partition?
RAID?
LVM?
Encryption?
It seems that you have selected an impossible combination.

There are some guides avalable, e.g.
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/PartitioningSchemes
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowtoPartition
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/DiskSpace

it's the default layout with a root partition and a boot partition
it's an old box, I assume it's FAT
BIOS
no extra /home partition
no RAID
yes, I did select LVM
no encryption

I chose "Erase whole disk ...", LVM and the default partitioning -- that's an impossible combination?

The problem isn't solved, but I'm not going to pursue it any further at this time. You needn't either if you don't want to.

grub has to be installed on the disk itself, not on a partition, in this case probably /dev/sda (and not /dev/sda1)

as I recall, I also tried /dev/sda -- the installation did not move forward when the OK button was clicked.

Can you help with this problem?
