I originally delayed updating from Ubuntu 17.04 to 17.10 just because of the mayhem that arose from the badly-prepared 17.04 (over-zealous updating of network manager), in which my contact with the internet was broken. This caused me a lot of pain, and I am going to upgrade very cautiously in future. Is the present problem due to a similar "improvement"? BTW I have been using Linux since the 1990s and would like to continue! I will not continue (as asked above) until I know what the cause of the trouble is.

   Regards

You have to tell us the error message that you receive when attempting an update.
Without details it is impossible to help.

Unfortunately no error messaged was shown! There is nothing e.g. in /var/crash. What other error lists would you need?
The Software Updater opens ok and shows the offered update list (in this case it contains e.g. JavaScript eng. library, PDF stuff, Ubuntu base stuff including Header files related to 4.13.0 and so on). It also states "The updates have already been downloaded.
When continuing with "Install now" the normal progress window opens up for a fraction of a second, then disappears without any error message.
Although Synaptic Package Manager, when clicked from the menu, tries to start for a while, it does not succeed in opening a window. On the other hand, synaptic comes up ok and brings up the normal window when started from a terminal.
BTW, this is all under Lubuntu.
Thanks for help so far!

What output could be helpful?
E.g. the results of really executing "sudo apt-get upgrade" or "sudo apt-get dist-upgrade"

Hi Manfred!
I have now carried out both apt-upgrade and apt-get dist-upgrade: both went through without any error messages.
But...synaptic package manager still will not run from the menu. It does, however, run from the command line (sudo synaptic).
When I run Software updater it goes through to the end and informs that the computer needs to be restarted ... which I will now do!
Greetings and thanks (so far!)
Robin

 Hi Manfred!
PC rebooted ok, but Synaptic package manager still fails to rise. The moral seems to be: when in trouble, use apt-get!
Thank you for your help. Maybe synaptic's maintainers can come up with a fix for this.
  Best regards
    Robin

There is a known problem with synaptic in wayland sessions, Bug #1712089

What output do you receive if you execute
synaptic-pkexec
in a terminal window?

Hi Manfred,
Here is the info you want.
I tried the test twice, with the results you see.
The third test was a normal "sudo synaptic", which succeeded in opening the window as normal.
As I use Synaptic Package Manager fairly often, I suspect that this bug has arisen within the last couple of months, at the most.
Hope that this helps you
Robin

Sorry to be so forgetful: of course I had the same problem earlier!
Now did
sudo apt-get upgrade
and
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

then a reboot, after which the update was shown as successfully completed.

Once again, synaptic package manager now has to be started by
sudo synaptic

but that's only a small disadvantage.
BTW, The result of
sudo synaptic-pkexec
is to raise synaptic.

Sorry to trouble you with the same old stuff. Problem solved.
Robin
