Problem Installing Ubuntu 8.10 on Sony Vaio laptop

Asked by Ri$e*Above

Hi all,
I recently attempted to install ubuntu 8.10 onto my sony vaio laptop after the windows vista broke down. During the installation i did a complete format and deleted vista, i'm fine with that. However the installation then failed while it was at 5% creating ext3 file!
I then went on to do a manual installation, deleting partitions ect.. and just about every other option the installer has and each time the installation would freeze at 5% when its trying to create ext3 file, sometimes the mouse and keyboard even become unresponsive.

I've installed ubuntu from the same disk successfully onto my much older tower computer with no problems, however that computer is currently not working either so as you can imagine im pretty desperate to get my laptop up and running again, any help anyone could offer would be very much appreciated!

Hey dude

It must be just a screen saver. Are you sure that is what is happening?Cause I've never seen this kind of a problem

Hey,

Thanks for the reply.

Yeah, it gets right upto the last part of the Ubuntu loading bar, then it just seems like the screen cuts out. Its not even like there is any kind of scrambled picture, it just goes black. I can still hear the laptop workin and the CD being read, but there is no image on the screen.

The screen saver suggestion you mentioned seems like it may be a cure. Would i adjust that through the existing Windows installation, or through the BIOS?

Cheers mate.

...i forgot to mention, i was running my finger over the Trackpad and pressing keys just incase it was a screen saver, but it didn't seem to cure the problem. Unless the screen saver function ignores that whilst loading up an OS?

Cheers.

HI

You Could Try the Live Session, While loading the live session press Alt+f1 to use the verbose mode. You can easliy identify the problem in verbose mode.

Also Try to post your laptop config especially the video card make and model for troubleshooting as this is related to display ..

Regards
Shyam
