[Jaunty] Random system crashes.

Asked by dlamer

Hi,

I need some help how to diagnose why my system randomly crash. The symptoms are that everything freeze, can't generate any response from the system. Mouse pointer freeze, keyboard is not responding and every animations (like cursor flashing, animated icons, flash on web pages) stops. Only hard power off is working (holding power button for few seconds).

What logs files to read or paste here ?

How to check the hardware ? (I only did a memtest for few hours and there was not any errors)

Thanks for any help.

In many cases the Ubuntu system provides you with automatic crash reports and asks you to submit bugrepports to Launchpad. However if your systems freezes like a Windows system it might be some more difficult to provide these repports.

If your system freezes so often, why don't you switch back to Interpid? Jaunty is still in beta (if you upgraded it after beta came available). If you have difficulty with getting your system stable and you use a beta system it is best to switch back to the stable branch 8.10!

Previously I had Kubuntu 8.10 on this machine and I had the same issue.

In that case it would be good to provide us with a bugrepport. Perhaps that is the best place to address these questions. What is needed is a detailed report of your hardware and what you were doing when the system froze.

Can you help with this problem?
