launcher disappears on mouse over ubuntu 16.04

Move the mouse over the launcher and the EVERYTHING on the desktop disappears for a few seconds. The wallpaper remains. Failed after the latest update (installed by me on 5 Jan 2018) and a reboot. Classic menu is the only way I can start an app. Reboot doesn't help. Additional symptom: once an app is running (eg, gedit, Firefox, etc) mouse over launcher works for that app. But move the mouse over any other icon in the launcher for an app not running and all disappears.

As to open app, sometimes mouse over the launcher works, sometimes it does not with no obvious reason for either behavior.

uname -a = "Linux bruce-ubuntu 4.4.0-104-generic #127-Ubuntu SMP Mon Dec 11 12:16:42 UTC 2017 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux" that is installed on a newer 64bit machine has none of these problems.
