Need to know if ubuntu 16.04 will install in my laptop

Asked by selvakumar subramanian on 2018-01-05

I have a Dell Inspiron 3542 that came with Ubuntu 12.04. Some applications like google chrome have stopped supporting 12.04. Would like to install ubuntu 16.04 that I downloaded from ubuntu site. Would like to know if there will be any issues. system details: Intel i3, 4 gb RAM, No graphics. It is not listed as a canonical parter as of now.

You can upgrade to Trusty (Ubuntu 14.04) and then to Xenial (Ubuntu 16.04). LTS to LTS upgrades are supported.

A clean install will be faster and give a cleaner OS.

Your system does have graphics. The i3 CPU has an Intel GPU built-in otherwise you wouldn't get an image on the screen.

If you use unetbootin, you can transfer the ISO (I assume you MD5 tested it) to a USB stick or you can burn the ISO as slowly as possible to an optical disk (like a CD).

You can then boot to the install media, select to use the entire drive (I assume you only have Ubuntu on the system) and install Xenial.

Be sure you downloaded the 64bit ISO and not the 32bit one.

Dell support site shows that it supports only Ubuntu 12.04 for this model of laptop. And it doesn't have the requisite device drivers for other versions of Ubuntu like 14.04 and 16.04. Will that be an issue.

Actually once I made a bootable USB stick with Ubuntu 14.04 and booted into that stick and it worked though it was slow due to the size of the USB drive which was 2 Gb. Just wanted to give more details. Laptop tag: 1SS4582
Model: Dell Inspiron 3542

If RAM is limited then I suggest Xubuntu or Lubuntu.

The spec. for your computer show 4GB of ram. If you were using USB drive, in just try not install mode, Ubuntu will run very slow. The 2GB USB drive should be large enough.

I suggest booting a LiveUSB image of Ubuntu or Lubuntu 16.04.

Test all functions during the LiveUSB session before deciding to install or not.

The LiveUSB session should give you all the hardware compatibility answers you seek.....

Can you help with this problem?
