desktop startup

I can't start up my desktop. The computer stop at command line. I type "startx". It gives Fatal server error: (EE) no screens found(EE). My computer worked before. However when I did update of Ubuntu in the desktop, I can't start up again my desktop.

If you boot an older kernel is it OK?

Hold SHIFT at boot and GRUB will show, use cursor keys and ENTER to select an older kernel (not recovery mode)
