installing an older ubuntu over a newer one

Asked by Ben

I am now trying to download an older version of Ubuntu over the other one and made an unetbootin installer but when I boot from the USB it shows an unetbootin screen with options like try ubuntu without installing or install Ubuntu and others. When I click Install words go down the screen then flashes then just a black screen. I used another installer but I don't remember what it was that worked

Did you MD5 test the ISO you downloaded or did you let unetbootin download the file for you?

I don't know what MD5 is, I downloaded it from the Ubuntu website then installed it into unetbootin. I'm going from 16.04.3 to 14.04.5

Did you use torrents to download the file?

never heard of MD5 but I downloaded it but I can't send the ISO file to it, I only have "bluetooth device" option.

Do you have WinMD5Sum already installed? Downloading is not enough. you have to execute the Install-winMd5Sum.exe file once to install the utility.

see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToMD5SUM#MD5SUM_on_Windows

I was able to upload ubuntu to md5 check sum and it says md5 check sums are different but the compare box is empty. I downloaded ubuntu from here http://mirror.pnl.gov/releases/trusty/ again and says the same thing

Which checksum value do you now get?
Is it the one listed in the respective link from https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuHashes
(I assume in your case http://releases.ubuntu.com/trusty/MD5SUMS )?

This is why I always ask if the file has been tested. TCP is good at catching bad packets but isn't infallible. Torrents add a lot of error checking
