cannot get firefox 55 running

Asked by bryan kelly

I joined this project as software engineer and it took an unexpected turn to Ubuntu Linux. I have never used Linux before. We need Firefox running with version 55 because we need the Copper plugin that will not work for later versions.
We downloaded that version, extracted from the tar file, and finally managed to put it in /usr/local/firefox_55
I have tried several searches looking for how to install it from the command line but have been unsuccessful.

What are the steps to complete the Firefox version 55 so every user has access?

Where did you download the file from?
What file name did you download?

We visited the Mozilla site, selected the chronological first of the version version 55 files, and downloaded that. I am at home and do not remember the exact name.

I am pretty sure we used this site: https://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/firefox/releases/
We picked version: 55.0.1. The tar was extracted to a directory that was renamed to firefox_55 then moved to /usr/local/firefox_55
because I read something that said to make it available to all users that would be a good place.

So to clarify are you running the binary:

/usr/local/firefox_55/firefox.bin

To run the browser?

Yes. I think I have resolved the problem.
After using cd to get to that directory I enter: firefox & and it starts
I was able to connect to the internet and install the Copper plug in. It works and shows information from the local server.
I presume that from a terminal app with directory set anywhere I can just type in:
/usr/local/firefox_55/firefox &
To get Firefox running. I presume that no "install" is needed.
If you have any suggestions I am all ears, but I will mark this thread as Problem Solved
