automatic white balance with Logitech C310 HD USB webcam

Asked by Andrea Gallo

Images from the Logitech C310 HD USB webcam are very yellow/sunburnt with every application using it since upgrading to Ubuntu 17.10 on ASUS UX390UA.

I installed guvcview and found out that the Automatic white balance flag is set by default though if I uncheck and re-check it then it gets activated and the image from the webcam becomes perfect. Once I quit, subsequent use of the webcam with other applications may or may not show the bad white balance behaviour.

On the contrary the ASUS UX390UA embedded webcam always works well by default with no issue at all.

Any thoughts?

I have installed v4l2ucp for further testing. My ASUS UX390UA embedded webcam is at /dev/video0 while my Logitech C310 HD is at /dev/video2. When I start v4l2ucp from the command line, I always get the same two errors consecutively with a pop up error window:

Unable to get menu item for Exposure, Auto, index=0
Will use Unknown

and then

Unable to get menu item for Exposure, Auto, index=2
Will use Unknown

So there is some problem with the v4l2 driver as it does not return the auto exposure menu item and hence it is not configured. When I do force it ON, then my logitech immediately activates it and displays a good picture.

My understanding is that the embedded VGA webcam in the Asus has autoexposure enabled by default while the Logitech needs it to be forced active.

Not sure why when I was with Ubuntu 14.04 I did not have this problem, maybe the v4l2 driver has undergone changes which have impacted the autoexposure initialization?
