If you drop to root recovery mode and run an fsck on the Linux partition you have Ubuntu on does it help?

What exactly happens if you try booting?
Do you see the grub menu?
Can you navigate in the grub menu?
Can you select advanced options for Ubuntu?
Can you select one of the kernels in recovery mode?
Can you select root (root command prompt)?

Well it has failed again.
So I replaced the 480gb ssd with the original 120gb SSD
This did work once, failed with the same problems.
I will be taking my PC back to computer shop tomorrow.
Will let you know the outcome.

We have cleaned the ssd 480gb, them reinstalled Windows Pro 10
On first partition follow by Ubuntu 16.04 on second partition.
No updates so far have been installed.

Question:

Would you recommend that we do a "Restore" from by backup.

Thanks again for any help or advice. Richard

How did you backup your data?

I used backup application on Ubuntu icon that looks a bit like a safe which excluded Rubbish bin. I copied all my Video files very few days
to a external HD.

Sounds like dejadup. You can restore what you need there.

We have found the real problem:-

On of the 4GB Ram cards was failing: This has now been replaced.

Also I did backup (dejadup) to restore very thing:

All Okay now.

Thanks for help. Andrew and Manfred.

Problem is BACK.

" error: attempt to read or write outside of disk 'hd0'. "

So I booted from a live disk Ubuntu 17.04 and did " sudo fsck /dev/sda5 " where Ubuntu 16.04 mounted.

Here are the results:-

To run a command as administrator (user "root"), use "sudo <command>".
See "man sudo_root" for details.

ubuntu@ubuntu:~$

When I first did this a few days ago it did work for 2 days.

Was able to boot into Windows last night - worked ok all night.

When I rebooted into Ubuntu 16.04 option - TODAY - This FAILED with the same error

error: attempt to read or write outside of disk 'hd0'.

I think that the problem is with ssd or grub

Questions

1 / would it help to replace Grub ?

2 / Or to do an update to 17.04 / 17.10 over writing Ubuntu16.04 - would this work ?

3 / I am thinking of replacing the 480GB ssd - and them re-install Windows Pro 10 them Ubuntu 16.04

Thanks for any advice.

Regards,

Richard

If Windows is not working, then I very much doubt that your problems are caused by Ubuntu.

Yes I agree.

We have replaced the 8GB ram 2 weeks ago and re-installed Windows them Ubuntu to 480GB ssd

What about replacing the 480GB ssd - and them re-install Windows Pro 10 them Ubuntu 16.04
