Ubuntu 17.10 Failed to install Chromium

Recently installed Ubuntu 17.10 on asus t300chi. When attempting to install chromium browser this fails. Error message is "Unable to install chromium. Failed to read from snapd. Error receiving data. Connection reset by peer." Mozilla Firefox installed ok during the distro install process. Tried uninstalling and reinstalling snapd by apt purge and apt install etc. No change in error message.se

what is the output of:

sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get clean; sudo apt-get --reinstall install chromium-browser
