ADSL wired connection does not work since upgrade

Asked by srikumar

Upgraded to the latest version of Ubuntu 17.10
using the default Firefox and Thunderbird Mail
ever since the upgrade the Wired ADSL connection does not connect to the Internet or Email.
The Wired Connection is showing as a "network symbol with a question mark in the middle of the symbol"
My hardware support say that there is no hardware problem and that it is a software issue.
any way to overcome this ?
Thank you.

I cannot see anything wrong.
Your last output shows that you can successfully communicate with the router.

This seems to me as if the router is not correctly forwarding the requests to the internet - for whatever reason.

I am using a Win XP / Ubuntu Dual Boot System.

The ADSL connection problem is only with Ubuntu

With Win XP, there is no problem and I can connect onto the internet, as I am doing right now.

Also tried with a Mobile Broadband Dongle connection - works with Win XP but not with Ubuntu.

Since the hardware is OK, is there some setting that needs to be changed in the Ubuntu ADSL connection settings.

I suggest that you compare the IP address settings between Ubuntu and Windows.
E.g.: Does the system get the same IP address when booted into Windows and when booted in Ubuntu?
(commands "ipconfig /all" in Windows and "ifconfig -a" in Ubuntu)

Is there anything shown in the Ubuntu system logs with respect to networking?
Boot Ubuntu without the network cable plugged in, wait a minute for the startup processes to finish, plug the network cable into the computer, wait another half minute and issue the command
dmesg | tail

I do not see anything wrong on Ubuntu side.
Do you need IPv6? if not, you could try disabling it.

Got a new Computer and installed Ubuntu with all the upgrades. Now the ADSL line works and can connect to the internet and receive emails as usual.
This question may now be closed.
Thank youi.
