Can only access the internet if I am connected to a VPN.

Asked by Michael Gomwe on 2017-11-12

Hello,

So I use expressVPN and i'm on ubuntu 16.04 LTS version.

I can only connect to the internet if I am using my VPN. If I am not using my VPN, then I cannot access any connectivity services.

For example, if I cmd "ping google.com" I get the error "ping: unknown host google.com". I cannot access any websites when i'm not using the VPN. However, when I connect to my VPN everything works fine.

I believe (from reading around the web) that it might be a DNS issue, but I am new to linux and have no clue how to go about resolving this issue. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

If you run:

echo "nameserver 8.8.8.8" | sudo tee /etc/resolv.conf > /dev/null

Do you get Web access?

Can you help with this problem?
