Settings desktop password change hangs 1710

Asked by Paul Hughes

I'm new to Ubuntu and am happy. Just upgraded to 1710. I've just tried to use desktop settings to change my password and after going through the dialogue of old/new/verify things just hung. Checked System Monitor and nothing seemed to be happening so closed down the change password dialogue from the settings screen behind. Then went to terminal and used passwd. The password had been changed.

I guess it's probably simpler to use terminal and passwd, but as a windows refugee I'd have hoped the desktop settings would work too.

The terminal is simpler.

Simply run:

passwd

Type your current password then your new password twice (You will get no feedback). Obviously root can set any password. Eg.

sudo passwd foo

to set foo's password. If you need to authenticate sudo then you will be asked that first, then you can type foo's new password.

Thanks for the response. No offense but I thought I had indicated I knew about passwd in the terminal.

Maybe I should be more explicit about my intentions.

I am a retired IT guy of sorts, nothing like you unix boffins. I have moved to Ubuntu because I don't want to have to continually upgrade my machine and its operating system unnecessarily, and pay the costs associated, into my dotage.

In my retirement, I support my older friends in their personal computer problems, mostly Windows based. Their needs are not great and for what they want Ubuntu on their current machines would suit them fine. I am looking to ensure that the desktop environment of Ubuntu will meet their needs.

I raised the original item simply to register the problem with the desktop change password facility.

Should I have registered a bug?

Can you help with this problem?
