Since upgrade from 17.04 to 17.10 neither Nautilus or Shotwell can connect to my USB PTP camera

Asked by Alan

Since upgrade to 17.10 Nautilus cannot see my camera (a Fujifilm HS30EXR) when connected via USB. Shotwell does show a "USB PTP camera" item under "Cameras" in its sidebar while the camera is connected and switched on, but if I select this item it displays the dialog "Shotwell Unable to fetch previews from the camera: Unspecified error (-1) [OK]". Selecting OK in this dialog leads Shotwell displaying "Starting import, please wait...", but no further action occurs. Problem occurring on 2 computers, a desktop and an HP Sleekbook 14-b030TU, neither of which had any problem connecting with the camera from 15.10 through 17.04.

I suggest you report a bug.

Do the devices work OK in the Ubuntu Live CD / USB desktop?

Thanks Actionparsnip, I conducted further testing with 3 additional cameras, Ubuntu 17.10 Live USB (Gnome), Ubuntu 17.04 with Unity, Ubuntu 17.10 with Unity and Fedora 26 with Gnome. The problem with the Fujifilm camera occurred in all instances of the current Gnome Desktop AND Ubuntu 17.10 when logged in to the Unity Desktop. (Ubuntu 16.04 with current updates is still good) Nautilus connected well with the storage on other cameras (Acorn Ltl 5130A, Nikon P340 and Olympus C8080WZ) except the 17.10 live USB which had some issues with the Nikon (could copy folders but had issues opening folders and files on the camera). Problem occurring on Fedora suggests the bug is in Gnome so I will track them down and report a bug there.

Typo: Ubuntu 16.04 above should read Ubuntu 17.04
