How to define system wide proxy settings in Ubuntu 17.10?

Asked by Thorsten Greeb

In the proxy settings dialog of the new system settings I'm missing the option to store the proxy settings system wide. How to do this in Artful?

You can do it with the bash variables:

http_proxy
https_proxy
ftp_proxy

You will also need to define the proxy in /etc/apt/apt.conf if apt-get and so forth should use the proxy as well.
