Problem after 17.04 to 17.10 upgrade

Asked by G. Herrick

Problem after 17.04 to 17.10 upgrade - seven days ago.
I have to boot using Grub, in recovery mode. System works ok. During power down, I get -
A Stop Job is Running for Session C3 of User GDM - which waits for 1 minute 30 - and then proceeds to finish.
System is an AMD64, with graphics on the motherboard. I will search for more detail if necessary.

On a "normal" start, (without Grub) system boots and gets to the Ubuntu screen with dots, and the mouse pointer appears - then screen flashes with /dev/sda1: clean ..... at the top, and some lines of text that there is insufficient time to read.

The motherboard is a Gigabyte MA74GMT-S2. The graphics are integrated in to an AMD740G

What happens at the end of an attempt to boot normally?

After the screen with UBUBTU with five dots below appears, the mouse pointer appears, and after a shart pause, the display shows

/dev/sda1: clean ....

with the number of blocks etc.

The display cycles/flashes with what I take to be some lines of text, (not a full number of lines of the screen, and not the full width of the screen) but they are displayed for too short a time for me to be able to read them. The /dev.... remains steady and readable.

That continues until I switch off the power.

The 17.10 upgrade displayed a warning that the first Re-Start could take a long time. The boot was as described above, and I left the system for over six hours.

Sorry, but I have no idea what the cause might be for this. Maybe somebody else can help

Still not solved.
I noticed that perhaps one word in one line of the text that flashes (see above) is red.

Hi

Question #66080, Bug #1730480

I have managed to get 'photo' of the "Error ... " line that is visible between the Grub menu and the Recovery Menu. It has taken a few attempts. Hope that helps.

Regards

G. Herrick
