Nvidia driver stopped working

Asked by Maria

I have an HP adm 64 and I am using ubuntu 8 10.
On Sunday, the computer asked me to update the nvidia driver from 173 to 180 so I did it and tunred my computer off since it was late.
On Monday, when I turned it on, once I tried to load my profile, it just didn't my screen was black.
Looking in when it loaded it only said there was an fatal error and that the kvm.amd wasn't ok. I began looking online for something related to it and finally found something saying that I had to use the recovery os and use in the root something like this sudo recofigure -phigh.. I can't really remember the rest.
The good news is that I can at least now see my screen... the bad one is that my resolution is very poor nad I am not sure what to do, cna you help me?

I had the same problem with Nvidia on a brand new motherboard. I installed the recommended driver but things went to pot in a hurry. So I did the old Windows trick (Yes, Windows does do some things better). I rolled back to the 173 driver, or in this case activated it and let it reinstall. After that became stable I updated to the new driver again only this time before rebooting the computer when asked to I went to the Nvidia configuration tool and set my video settings first. However it would let me save them to the X11 conf file I had to use sudo gedit and copy and paste the new settings (first saving a backup file before modifying).

Hope this helps.

Oops, make that it wouldn't let me save to the conf file. Sorry.

Can you help with this problem?
