Stopped having sound output on laptop with Ubuntu 16.04

Asked by Inês

Hi there,

After not using my Dell XPS 12 Ultrabook laptop for a month, my sound output was gone out of the blue (both via in-built speakers and earphones). I have tried many things and seen it's even a popular issue on some Dells but haven't managed to restore sound in any form. Don't have the sound icon in the taskbar anymore and in Sound Settings both the sound output and input devices are blank. I checked with the alsamixer command and everything is unmuted and maxed.

Here's all the technical details from ALSA : http://www.alsa-project.org/db/?f=c72716747b8a1dda0e77e88648f500dbdffacba7

lspci returns:

Run the below command:

killall pulseaudio; rm -r ~/.config/pulse/* ; rm -r ~/.pulse*

Wait ten seconds, then run this:

pulseaudio -k

Do you then get sound OK?

Hi,

Thanks for the suggestion but no, I don't get any sound. I had tried it in the past as part of these procedures: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SoundTroubleshootingProcedure

Hi,

I am still without sound. It came back for a bit after an update and a restart but then stopped working again according to what I already described above.
