mouse problem

why does my mouse occasionally freeze? sometimes it just gets it's own mind and jumps to different places all by itself, i have lost work in libre office because the mouse decides to close the existing window or throw it to the rubbish bin. it is really frustrating

Does the system have a make and model?
What release of Ubuntu are you using?
How does the mouse connect to the system?

We need to know about the system as well as the problem you are facing.

the computer is a dell optiplex 960 running ubuntu 16.04
the mouse is an A4 tech running the latest drivers.
I have been using this system for a year or more & the
problem only started happening this week

no, it's plugged into the motherboard by the ps2 mouse connector
